Experiential Learning

Internships, experiential learning, co-curricular activities, and fieldwork are all an important part of the ̽»¨ÊÓƵ experience. They are designed to enrich your education and prepare you for your future. Our location in metro New York City plus our state-of-the-art facilities, used for classroom and co-curricular experiences, ensure that while your classroom education is grounded in excellent scholarship and academics, the experiences you’ll gain as an undergraduate student will uniquely position you for success.

Career Center
  • Ever wonder what liberal arts majors could do with their degrees? The answer? A lot! Find out how many ̽»¨ÊÓƵ College of Liberal Arts and Sciences students secure internships.
  • Learn how the Political Science department supports a semester in Washington, DC or the Albany Fellowship program
  • Drama students have an opportunity to perform in the University’s annual Shakespeare Festival on the Ì½»¨ÊÓƵ Globe Stage, the most authentic replica of Shakespeare’s Globe in the country.
  • The student-run  Gallery hosts exhibitions throughout the year, giving Fine Arts majors and minors an opportunity to showcase their work. The Rosenberg Gallery brings in exhibits by guest artists who meet with students to talk about their craft and the business of the art world.
  • Students in the Music Department hone their talents by performing with the large and small department ensembles and presenting recitals in their junior and senior years. Clubs like  (the Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association) and the student-run record label, Unispan Records, also offer real-world experience.
  • The Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy offers Labor Studies and Economics majors opportunities engage in research and surveys and to help coordinate lectures and conferences. Some have had their work published in the distinguished Regional Labor Review journal.

The Great Writers, Great Readings Series presents famous novelists, playwrights, poets and essayists, and encourages students to meet and question these important, award-winning writers about their craft.
  • The Gittleson Hall  is a group of labs, classrooms, and computer facilities serving students in Biology, Geology, Environmental Science and Sustainability, Bioengineering, and Chemistry. The resources found here prepare students for 21st-century jobs in the biotech, environmental science and health services fields.
  • Fieldwork is essential to a major in the natural sciences. Biology and Urban Ecology students may study terrapin behavior in Jamaica Bay and . Geology students have also hit the road, heading to the western U.S. to follow the path of a , and studying the volcanoes of Santorini and Nisyros. Students also have the opportunity to take a January session course that will take them either to the Galápagos Islands and Ecuador for studies of ecology and evolution or to Belize for courses in marine biology.
  • ̽»¨ÊÓƵ's Center for Public Archeology (CfPA) offers opportunities for Anthropology students to do fieldwork and collaborate with local organizations on archeological projects. For instance, students and ̽»¨ÊÓƵ faculty excavated the grounds of the Joseph Lloyd Manor, a Long Island site that had an 18th-century slave quarter on the premises.

  • Office of Field Placement - places students in field observations, clinical experiences, and student teaching to facilitate hands-on experiences.
  • Office of Professional Development Services - provides a year-round schedule of seminars and professional development workshops
  • Paid internships in K-12 schools - students complete their formal student teaching placements in the fall semester and then segue into a paid internship role for the remainder of the school year through the end of the spring term.
  • The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center - a multidisciplinary facility at ̽»¨ÊÓƵ that provides low-cost, cutting-edge therapies to the public and unique research and training opportunities to students - including the Child Care Institute.
  • ̽»¨ÊÓƵ’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program - In partnership with the Farmingdale School District, ̽»¨ÊÓƵ graduates manage the teaching aspects of its Universal Pre-K (UPK) program. This collaboration gives newly certified ̽»¨ÊÓƵ education graduates a chance to complete their first year of teaching with consistent professional support.

  • The Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room - equipped with 34 Bloomberg terminals, it is among the largest and most technologically advanced academic facilities in the nation.
  • Student Managed Investment Fund - learning opportunity for students to manage an investment pool of real money.
  • Dean's Business Scholars Program - provides high-achieving students with enrichment opportunities designed to enhance their business education including: special panel discussions; luncheons; Executive Speaker Series events; trips to local and New York City companies; engagement with the Zarb School's Executives in Residence and experiential learning projects.
  • Center for Entrepreneurship - provides bootcamps, mentoring, and other programs to help students become accomplished entrepreneurs including pitch competitions such as the $75,000 Ì½»¨ÊÓƵ-Digital Remedy Venture Challenge, a student-run record label - Unispan Records, and a Maker Space that trains them on the proper use of the equipment and assists them with prototype development.

  • The Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science offers a co-op program with world-class companies in the New York metro area to provide students with the opportunity to work as a full time, salaried employee after the fall or spring semester of their junior year in a field related to their major. After the completion of the co-op experience, students return to ̽»¨ÊÓƵ to complete their degree requirements.
  • Students in the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science get hands-on experience in the school's academic facilities, including a Big Data Lab, Cell and Tissue Engineering Lab, and Ultrasound Research Lab, as well as real-work experience and exposure to industry issues in the Center for Innovation.

    The ̽»¨ÊÓƵ in Silicon Valley Program hosted by the DeMatteis School is a week-long trip designed to give computer science students an inside look into top tier West Coast technology companies.
  • ASPiRe (Advanced Summer Program in Research):
    ASPiRe is a 10-week summer program for engineering and computer science students interested in pursuing a research project related to their major. ASPiRe students work full-time in DeMatteis laboratories under the guidance of faculty peer mentors.

    During the annual Capture the Flag cybersecurity competition, students are challenged to defend their computer servers and attack their competitors’ potential vulnerabilities over a 24-hour period.

    The DeMatteis School’s Executive Speaker Series brings industry professionals to campus each semester to provide insight into career options.

    Teams of students are given a budget of $15 to purchase materials, design, and build one of six specified mechanical devices powered with no more than ten rubber bands. The competition marks the end of Designing the Human-Made World (ENGG 015).
  • OverSEAS:
    Anticipated to launch in Summer 2020, the OverSEAS program provides engineering students with the opportunity to complete a real-world capstone design project in Central or South America during the summer of their junior year.
